CPI launches online Green Belt training

By Thomas Perry DCMA Public Affairs

The Continuous Process Improvement office now offers its Green Belt class online.

According to CPI leadership, the new format provides frontline problem-solving skills in a self-paced, on-demand platform for individuals and organizations. The students will receive contact hours with Black Belts as a mentor verses the traditional arrangement as a course instructor creating a vastly more personalized learning experience. This online version can be found on DCMA’s 360 Talent Management System (login required) as LSST201. It is replacing the classroom version, which is ending this year.

“We were challenged to alter our instructional approach in light of significant budget reductions in 2017,” said Andrew Miskovich, a master black belt who serves as the agency’s CPI deployment director. “We have found that implementing a well-designed online course based on the international standard American Society of Quality combined with personalized mentoring can produce stronger first line CPI practitioners at a fraction of the cost.”

In addition to the financial impact, the online presence provides the agency and its team members with other long-term benefits.

“The Green Belt training provides robust training to individuals to facilitate improvement teams to solve complex problems through data driven approaches,” said Miskovich. “The course utilizes practical problem-solving to accompany the tools and techniques learned through instruction to achieve lower operating costs, improve productivity, achieve quality and reduce variation to positively affect customer service and create lasting organization improvement.”

The CPI office has also launched Yellow and Orange Belt online course training. The Yellow Belt training introduces key performance improvement skills and knowledge supporting effective team problem solving through a process improvement project. It can be found on TMS as LSST100. While Yellow requires no prior course completion, it serves as prerequisite to the Green Belt course designed to shorten the CPI skills learning curve.

According to the course description, the Orange Belt program is intended for operational team leads to learn how to better address immediate problems in a quick, learn-as-you-go approach. The training addresses problem solving right out of the box by following an eight-step format of first defining and then understanding the issues impact and probable solutions.
