Cybersecurity Awareness Month message

By Ray Coleman DCMA Information Technology

October marks the 15th annual National Cybersecurity Awareness Month, created to raise national awareness of cybersecurity and the importance it plays in our lives.

This month, we will highlight things you can do at home and at work to keep yourself and the Defense Contract Management Agency safeguarded. A lot of the things that we do here at DCMA to protect our network you can easily apply to at home to protect your network and family. You will also get to hear from a couple members of our cybersecurity team who help keep DCMA safe from the inside and out. Each DCMA employee is the first line defense to DCMA’s cybersecurity, so we will try to go a bit more in depth as to why we do the things we do, like block certain websites, in order to help you safeguard DCMA’s network.

Every day the enemy is trying to gain access to our information – both DCMA’s business information and each individual’s personal information. DCMAIT’s Cybersecurity Center works around the clock to protect our network, as well as provide you with the necessary tools you need to keep yourself and your families safe from the cyber threat. Everyday technology is advancing and devices are getting “smarter” (like doorbells, lamps, TVs, etc.), so you want to ensure you are taking the rights precautions when introducing these devices to your home and connecting to your information. It may sound silly, but someone may try to hack your smart doorbell. They do this not because they want to see who is coming to your house, but to gain access to the devices that doorbell is connected to, which could get them access to information they can steal from you to duplicate your identity or steal from you.

If you have any questions about cybersecurity — why we do what we do to defend the network, threats, or anything related to what we present throughout the month — please submit them to dcma.lee.it-dir.list.dcmait-k-eta@mail.mil for collection. I will be hosting a TechTalk on Oct. 29 at 1 p.m. Eastern where I will wrap up Cybersecurity Awareness Month and answer all your questions.
