My DCMA showcases the Defense Contract Management Agency’s experienced and diverse workforce and highlights what being a part of the national defense team means to them. Today we meet Sandy Binny, a Singapore local national employee who is a part of the International Command.
My name is Sandra Binny, and this is “My DCMA.”
I am the executive assistant for DCMA's International’s Pacific office. I have worked for the agency for almost 20 years.
However, my history with working in Singapore for the United States goes as far back as 1989 when I was a secretary with the Navy’s Fleet Air Western Pacific Repair Activity. In 1992, I was asked if I wanted to remain with the Navy or transfer to Defense Contract Management Command, which at the time was a command within the Defense Logistics Agency. I chose to join the DCMC team, which officially became the agency we know today in 2000. I’d like to say that my role and dedication to this mission and team began then and has lasted strong for 27 years.
My main duties are to provide administrative support to the DCMA Pacific commander and deputy commander. This entails tasks such as preparing their travel arrangements and authorizations. I provide additional support on other administrative tasks as needed to support our unique mission. I serve as the government purchase card holder for the Singapore office and support our other offices in the Pacific by procuring office supplies for them. I compile and ensure that the timesheets for the five local nationals who work here are submitted on time to the Navy payroll office.
I enjoy helping new employees get in-processed at the Singapore location. I have heard that it can be difficult or stressful for people new to an international office to ensure they have everything ready for them to begin working at full capacity. And with our mission, I hope to do anything and everything I can to ensure the work I am able to do or assist with can alleviate any undue stress on new DCMA Pacific employees. I assist the executive officer with all other day-to-day administrative duties as required to ensure our office continues to run smoothly and effectively.
After some long hours at the office, I love to unwind by baking and cooking for my family. In my spare time, I enjoy arts and crafts. I feel these outlets allow me to consistently come into work refreshed and positive.
I have worked for many commanders during my 27-year career and have seen so many great changes within the organization. I have learned and gained a lot from these changes and have met many wonderful people during the course of my career.
I would have to say that one of the greatest things about DCMA is that I have had the opportunity to travel, which has led me to meet my co-workers from our offices around the Pacific. Those face-to-face meetings allowed our working relationships to grow. I was also able to make those work trips into opportunities to learn about different cultures in the region.
